Coccidiosis
Coddidiosis is an intestinal disease, caused by parasites.Outbreaks are mainly a result of housing older and younger calves in one group. Often the cause will be a filthy, contaminated pen and intake of with manure infected straw or hay. After intake oöcystes can harm the intestinal mucosa.
Symptoms
- at their first there are no typical symptoms
- listlessness (apathy), getting thinner, much stomach
- no raise of temperature
- watery manure, slimy and blood clots
- dirty rear end (behind)
- pressure on intestine with an arched back
- in later stage anaemia and dehydration, until death follows
Causes
- infections through feeds or drinking water or wet straw bed
- with increasing infection pressure contamination of young calves by the older ones
- pathogens (oöcysts) are able to maintain longer than 1 year at humid places
Treatment
- have sick calves treated with coccidiostaticum by a veterianarian surgeon
- supply a blend of electrolytes (EMIX) and extra vitamins and minerals (VIMIX) with severe diarrhoea
- dry lying place
- clean drinking and feeding troughs
- supply hay in a rack
