Roughage and concentrates |
The intake of concentrates depends on:
- the level of milk and roughage intake by a calf
- water supply
- the taste of the concentrate/pellet feed
- age of the calf
- location and height of the feed tank
- regular cleaning of the feed tank and daily removal of residues
To achieve the highest growth rate possible, calves need to be fed with concentrates and special starter feeds.
This concentrate should have a lysine content of about 0.8%.
The preferred type of roughage will be hay or alfalfa. Good results can also be obtained with pre-dried silage (if dried > 60%). Limited fodder is possible.
Roughage:
- should be of premium quality
- should not contain any mould
- should be wholesome in structure
Location of roughage and concentrates supply
- close to water supply system
- not on a low floor
- feed hay through a rack
- provide concentrates with a trough or fodder tank at a height of ± 40 cm
