A drinking machine for calves will relieve a dairy farmer considerably. Because he or she is not bound to fixed feeding times anymore, the farmer can plan his/her time more flexible. However, both the young animals as well as the machine need regular 'care'. Herewith some points of attention and tips:
Calves
- Only connect healty calves with the drinking machine.
- Preferably after 7 days in order to reduce transfer of diseases. Until then, feed calves individually through a weaning bucket so calves get used to drinking from a teet and they will properly develop a good suckling reflex.
- Make sure calves have fress water at their disposal at any time and they are able to eat sufficient roughage and concentrates.
- Calves are best stabled in a clean shed with a thick layer of straw. Important: avoid air movement (draught) in the stable!
- When young calves are admitted into the group, it is essential that the new calves are fed with milk 3 to 4 times a day (think of 'spoiling').
- Check the calves a few times a day. Observe their behaviour; drinking behaviour (number of visits and drinking speed) is a good indicator here.
- Pay attention to deviant behaviour of the calves. If animals attract your attention, check them for diseases.
- Mind the number of calves per pen (max. 20 animals)
- Create two groups of age.
Machine
- Daily check the storage reservoir of the milk powder.
- Regularly calibrate the machine (newest models will indicate moment).
- Make sure a proper cleaning cycle is in place: clean 2 times a day.
- Check the powder outlet of the reservoir and for possible blockages.
- Check the suction hose and teet several times a week to secure a quick milk flow.
- Replace the suction hose in time.
- Hang up a night lamp above the drinking box.
