Is good pen ventilation of influence on the growth process of a calf?
Answer
Absolutely. Ventilation has both a direct as well an indirect effect on the calf’s growth.
Direct: because of too much ventilation the calf will cool down more quickly and therefore needs more energy to keep the right temperature. This will have a negative influence on the calf’s growth. Indirect: if there is too much ventilation, there will be draught, which could lead to problems of the bronchial tubes. When there is too little ventilation the air humidity rises and the chance of a bacterial infection increases. In both cases the calf becomes ill and the growth will be less. In short: a calf needs sufficient fresh air, where air movement should not be over 0.25 m per second. It is important to fine-tune your ventilation upon this. For personal advice, you can contact us.
